Dolphin Derby Wrap Up by Jimmy Loveland
The 2005 VIGFC/Offshore Marine "Dolphin Derby" held
Sunday April 24th is in the history books. Tournament Director
Dee Belche reported that 30+ boats searched the calm waters between
St. Thomas and St. Croix and caught a total of 867 pounds of dolphin
(40 fish averaged 22lbs.). The largest a 40.7 pounder was caught
off St. Croix by Bill Griffin Jr. on Oh Suzanna, second place
was Dennis McCormick (STX) on One Eyed Wahoo at 32.3 lbs and the
3rd place winner was Ricky Farmer of St. Thomas, fishing aboard
Black Pearl, boating a 30.1 pounder.
The attendees at the St. Thomas awards banquet enjoyed a lively
cookout at the club and it must be said that they were forced
to conceded that the St. Croix anglers were the overall winners!
Many white marlin and several blue marlin were raised during
the Dolphin Derby. One blue marlin was jointly released by visiting
brothers Sean (12yrs.) and Bryan Connell (14 yrs.) while fishing
with their dad John and Capt. Danny Boland. The brothers were
aboard a Pocket Yacht (open rental boat) on their very first big
game trip. The tussle with the 125 pound marlin lasted 45 minutes
on 30 lb. test.
