REEL TIGHT WINS 45TH ANNUAL JULY OPEN BILLFISH TOURNAMENT
by Carol Bareuther, RD

July 17, 2008

Top Boat honors in the 45th annual July Open Billfish Tournament went to Reel Tight, and you could call it by divine intervention. Just weeks ago, owner, avid Virgin Islands' sports fishermen and Hillsboro Beach, Florida-based angler, Jim Lambert, passed away after a long fight with cancer.

"It was always his idea that we would continue. We all have a shared love of fishing," says Reel Tight mate, Robert 'Fly' Navarro.

Tournament fishing started out slow for the 16-boat fleet and Reel Tight went fishless on the first day.

"It was one of those 'awww man' type of days," says Reel Tight captain, Eddie Herbert.

Luck on the 82-foot Merritt, based out of Hillsboro, Florida, changed the next day.

"It was about 11 a.m. when we rigged Jim's special Reel Tight lure and put it in the water," says mate, Joe Figiel. "We didn't catch anything on it, but just putting it in the water changed our luck."

Reel Tight released three fish on both the second and third days of this three-day tournament to end with 6 releases and the Top Boat prize.

"We've never won this tournament before," says Lambert's son, Jimmy Lambert, who fished as one of the anglers. "I think you could say my dad was with us in spirit."

Big Oh, a 63-foot Scarborough finished Second Top Boat, with five blue marlin releases, all by owner/angler, Gray Ingram. Ingram was awarded Top Angler and gets his name engraved on the prestigious 'Give 'm Line' Trophy.

"We've never fished the Virgin Islands before, but we've heard how good the fishing was," says Ingram, who homeports out of Jupiter Beach, Florida. "The first day was slow, but it picked up after that. We'll be here for fishing for the summer."

Black Gold, an ACY 65' owned by Boca Raton, Florida's Harry Sargeant, finished Third Top Boat with the release of (five blue marlin.)

"Fishing kept getting better and better every day," says Sargeant.

Day 3 - Sunday

Abigail III hangs on to win the 44th Annual July Open Billfish tournament. Angler Tim Aylward on Abigail III wins the prestigious Give'm Line Trophy.

The fishing picked up on the last day of the 44th Annual July Open Billfish Tournament with the 16 entrants going 23 for 30. Marlin Darlin came ever so close to winning the event when they released 4 Blue Marlin but lost 100 points when they couldn't come up with a tag on one fish. They had to settle for second place. Gulf Rascal came in third.

Day 2 - Saturday

Day two saw Abigail III charge into the lead releasing 3 Blue Marlin and squeaking out Gulf Rascal on time of catch. Freebie got off to a great start when Vince Austin brought in the first Blue Marlin just 17 minutes into the start of day. This put Freebie into the early lead but it would be the the last fish they could bring to the hook. Therapy, with two releases but only one tag, holds the third spot. It's still anyone's tournament to win. The tournament continues tomorrow with lines in at 8:30 AM.

Day 1 - Friday

Sixteen boats found the fishing slower then they expected on day one of the 44th Annual July Open Billfish Tournament. Angler James MacNeil broke the ice at 10:05 AM when he reeled in the first marlin of the tournament aboard Mixed Bag.

Seven boats are currently tied on the leader board with 600 points with each boat tagging and releasing one blue marlin. Some of the non-tournament boats fishing the famous North Drop found the fishing a little better with one boat releasing 3 Blue Marlin in 5 attempts. Fishing continues on Saturday with lines in at 8:30 AM.

7th Annual Caribbean Auto Mart Wahoo Windup

Sunday November 12, 2006

Twenty six boats and 104 anglers from St. Thomas and 14 boats and 60 anglers from St. Croix fished it out in the 7th Annual Caribbean Auto Mart Wahoo Windup on Sunday. The weather couldn't have been nicer in a tournament known for rough seas. The Caribbean Auto Mart Chevy Colorado Truck had to be returned to the lot as no angler caught a Wahoo over 75 pounds. The largest Wahoo, and the 1st Place prize of $1000, went to St Croix angler Larry Kupfer onboard Sunflower with a catch of 34.5 pounds. The best boat award went to St. Thomas boat Little Double Header with 3 Wahoo totaling 76.3 pounds. A total of 19 fish weighing 472 pounds were caught. Not the best year but not bad.
